Bar and Bat Mitzvah

bar bat mitzvah confirmation torah Jewish education

It is a very special day in the life of our congregation when we celebrate the Bar or Bat Mitzvah of one of our congregants, and TAS offers an outstanding B’nai Mitzvah program providing our families a truly meaningful rite of passage for their children. The B'nai Mitzvah program is an extension of our Mosad Shalom Religious School, in which our students are taught to read Torah, chant Haftarah and lead our congregation in worship in a memorable Bar or Bat Mitzvah ceremony.

Each member of our clergy and administrative staff is involved in the preparation process, which begins with 3 experiential family workshops and 20 weeks of individual instruction by our superb tutoring staff supervised by our Cantor. This also includes 6 weeks of personalized student rehearsals with the Cantor in the sanctuary, individual meetings with a Rabbi to prepare their speech and Torah or Haftarah summary, as well as a family meeting with the Cantor so that the music, readings and participation by members of the family reflect the spirit of the individual families and making it a truly memorable occasion.

Our program also boasts a very successful individualized computer learning program that enables students to practice using their computers or mp3 players as a study tool. For those who would like to learn how to chant their Torah portion and expand their cantillation skills, we also offer an optional 6 week Torah Cantillation class to our 7th grade students, taught by Cantor Frank, .

At Temple Adat Shalom, we believe that any child who is committed to demonstrating their maturity as a Jew in a B'nai Mitzvah ceremony deserves the support they need to achieve that goal. We make every effort to accommodate children with learning disabilities or other special needs.
